Run by Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary School's Science Department and students, Science Club welcomes students who have a passion and flare for science. We discuss current scientific topics, experiment, and invite world class guest speakers, all while working on science fair projects and preparing for competitions. Join us Tuesdays at lunch in room 3432!

About Us

Club Sponsor

Mrs. E. Chin-Dixon is the teacher sponsor for Science Club. She is a biologist who has a love for nature and everything science-related! She holds a M Sc. in Immunology and has a lot of real-world experience working as a biochemist, a molecular biologist and as a fisheries biologist. An avid adventurer, she has ziplined the canopy in Ushuaia, skied down active Andean volcanoes and snorkelled shark infested waters off the coast of Australia. Recently, she enjoyed a ½ year sabbatical living in Chile with her family where she picked up a 4th language, Spanish. President

Austin Sun is the president of Science Club. He is a grade 12 student at Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary School. He is very keen in learning the sciences and was placed in third place at the Physics at Mac Challenge. Austin also played a key role in SJAM’s 5th-place team at the 2014 and 2015 Canadian Team Math Competition. He is also into reading world literature in his spare time. Directors

Daniel Javaheri-Zadeh is one of Science Club's three directors. He is a grade 12 student at Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary School. He achieved the top mark in SJAM's computer engineering technology course two years in a row. He enjoys volunteering at the Grand River Hospital and has volunteered with Engineering Science Quest. Jordan Van wyk is a grade 12 student at Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary School and is one of Science Club's three directors. He has achieved top marks in his maths and science courses and wishes to pursue higher education in the medical engineering world. He enjoys traveling, mountain biking and flying. Jordan is also the President of SJAM Mash and Co-Chair of the Global issues club along with membership in various other clubs and bands. Jordan Van wyk balls hard. John Fish is a grade 11 student at Sir John A Macdonald. This last year he was one of SJAM's first representatives at the Canada Wide Science Fair. John is a top student at SJAM, consistently earning awards for top marks in STEM courses as well as overall average. John is an OFSAA medalist in track, and an OFSAA representative in cross country. Public Relations Officers

Minzee Kim is the public relations officer of Science Club and is in grade 12 at Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary School. She received SJAM Gold Honours Awards in both grade 9 and 10 for her academic achievements, and is an avid member of the SJAM music program that won multiple awards in local and national competitions. She works as a lab assistant in the science department and can be reached at minzeekim98@gmail.com.

A grade 11 student at Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary School, HyoJin Son is the public relations officer of Science Club. She is an active member in her school’s student council, and has a passion for science. She has also received a gold medal in the intermediate division at the Waterloo-Wellington Science and Engineering Fair. Outside of school she can often be found volunteering for her community or performing as a member of the KW Symphony Youth Orchestra. She can be reached at hyojinson@hotmail.com

Secretary

Advait Maybhate is the secretary of Science Club. He is a grade 10 student at Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary School. He has received silver and gold medals in the junior and intermediate divisions at the Waterloo-Wellington Science and Engineering Fair. He is part of MENSA (The High IQ Society) and earned a perfect score in the 2013 Gauss math contest, placed first in the 2012 Mathletics competition held by the Professional Engineers of Ontario and was the 2015 school champion in the Pascal math contest.
